SVANETIA (NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE): MM8204

Men gather in the St George Church for the Lichanish festivities, which are organized once a year to ask for blessing for the birth of sons in the family. The men bless sheep with prayers and candles brought as offerings that are then slaughtered. They chant something like a plea to St George to give them sons, over and over for hours in the dark (11th C?) church. Tall poles are erected with the belief that the tallest will bring the greatest blessings to the family.
