THE MELROSE AVE MURAL INSTALLATION WITH SHEPARD FAIREY

with 4 comments

“They made us many promises, more than I can remember. But they kept but one – They promised to take our land…and they took it.”
- Chief Red Cloud

“THE BLACK HILLS ARE NOT FOR SALE!” is a common rallying cry for Treaty rights on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

In 1980 The longest running court case in U.S. history, the Sioux Nation v. the United States, was ruled upon by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court determined that, when the Sioux were resettled onto reservations and seven million acres of their land were opened up to prospectors and homesteaders, the terms of the second Fort Laramie treaty had been violated. The court statedthat the Black Hills were illegally taken and that the initial offering price plus interest should be paid to the Sioux Nation. As payment for the Black Hills, the court awarded only 106 million dollars to the Sioux Nation. The Sioux refused the money with the rallying cry, “The Black Hills are not for sale.”

The United States continues on a daily basis to violate the terms of the 1851 and 1868 Fort Laramie treaties with the Lakota. The call to action I offer today is this: Honor the treaties. Give back the Black Hills. It’s not your business what they do with them.

Many thanks to Miguel at Barracuda for the wall! And also to Daryl Hannah for spending her day with us and for spreading the word through her network, to Sinuhe Xavier who organized the wall and all prep, rented the lift and brought his amazing assistant Taylor Kent, to Neeta Lind for rallying the Daily KOS community, to Chet Hay for handy mannery, to Daniel Salin for running the pasting show and scissor lift, to Eric Becker and Scott Everett for their epic day of filming, and to the handful of Lakota who came in person to support. And of course to Shepard Fairey for his generous donation of time, art, and money. And to www.Emphas.is crowdfunding for photojournalists!

L.A. MURAL WITH SHEPARD FAIREY

with 2 comments

Shepard Fairey has (again) generously donated his time, skills, and money to help me make this 20×60 foot wall mural. This last minute wall bonanza is the result of some hard work by L.A. based photographer and activist >>> Sinuhe Xavier. The installation will happen Saturday November 26th at Melrose and Fairfax on the “Barracuda Wall.” If you are in LA this weekend come see us! More updates to come.

COLLABORATION WITH ARTIST/ACTIVIST ERNESTO YERENA

with 4 comments

I have the honor this week to announce that I will be working on a collaborative series with the artist/activist ERNESTO YERENA (please check out the video of Ernesto’s work aired on the BBC below this image). We will be producing a campaign based on the images and message of my TED talk on the Lakota. We will launch a crowdsourcing campaign on the debut of Emphas.is to pay for printing of posters and advertising space on billboards/busses/subways/airports. We have also recently signed up the most prolific street artist in America to work on the project with us. >>>SHEPARD FAIREY<<<. Check back for more details soon. This is the first working sketch of many to come.Ernesto_Yerena_Aaron_Huey_Pine_RidgeHECHO CON GANASPine_Ridge_Aaron_Huey_yIn The Shadow of Wounded Knee
